GOODBYE TO A FRIEND

For those of you that had the pleasure of knowing Jimmy Curlin I am sure how you must feel on the learning of his passing early Saturday morning following the last 10 years of suffering.  Jimmy somedays could barely walk into the clubhouse to sign in for that days play.  The reason he did was he was a people person, a competitor, a lover of golf and most of all one of the most caring people I have ever known.  Jimmy was always the first person there to ask a simple question “what can I do to help”. His smile, in all of his years of suffering with all sorts of complications, never left his face but because of his pain it was sometimes hard to muster but he still did.

Nancy and I were some of the fortunate ones to have known Jimmy over the last 30 plus years, attended his wedding to his wonderful wife Toni and were the recipients of “what can I do to help” on several occasions personally.

It is a known fact that Jimmy and I had a couple immature battles over the years but I never lost respect for him and the kind hearted person he was.

May God see that same kind hearted person that I saw and say to him at the Gates of Heaven

“Welcome Home My Son You Have Served Me Well”

RIP

Jimmy Curlin

WEEKLY RESULTS

WEEK ENDING 8/31/19

CONGRATULATIONS

JERRY GOODMAN

 WINNER OF AUGUST

Jerry Goodman won the month of August with a record setting total of 788 points.  Jerry accomplished this by having 6 top 5’s with four of those being wins.  Jerry’s 788 points would have him currently in the 18th position on the running points list without even using the other four months points earned.  Jerry eclipsed the previous high monthly total of 568 by Jeff Corr.

A WORD ABOUT POINTS NEEDED

I call the attention to any player or players that may be attempting to secure a lower points needed for the shootout by all of a sudden their points made seem to be steadily going south.  Please see under handicaps on the rules sheet on our website where it says that the “group manager may assign a players H/C based on a players ability to a number that would not be detrimental to fairness of the field”

This has never been a problem under the new system of handicapping but I feel it necessary to bring it up about this time before an upcoming shootout.

GOODMAN CONTINUES ONSLAUGHT

That man, Jerry Goodman, continued his onslaught on the field Friday by posting another subpar five birdie round of 69 +6. In all my years of running a skins game of some type I do not believe I have every witnessed such continued great play from an amateur golfer.  Jerry is 71 years old and plays the white tees now but can call on his history playing golf at a very high level including stints on the old Tommy Armour Tour and other professional stops. To watch him use his effortless swing is a thing of beauty and the results of said swing are right now where he wants them to be.

EBBERT WINS FOR SECOND WEEK IN A ROW

For a player that was in fear of not making the shootout three weeks ago it is funny how these things seem to take care of themselves. Or, should I say get taking care of by a player by making a better effort to do their best when given the chance to play. Case in point, Jeff Ebbert 74 +5, was sitting in the 38 position on July 20th and today sits in the 13th position without fear of not making the shootout.  He only needs to play the necessary three plays in the last 12 and all the T’s are crossed and I’s dotted.  Cases like Jeff and Jerry Goodman just show it is never to late to make the ultimate prize of making the shootout and take a chance of winning the $1200 first place prize and the $25 play card good at both Eagle Dunes and Black Bear for game days over the next six months.

12 PLAY DATES LEFT IN QUALIFYING

There are only twelve play dates, baring rain outs, left in qualifying for the shootout for Points Chases of Central Florida XXIX to be held on October 4th and 5th.

I want to remind all players of the following:

1)   You must be a part of the top 32 players on the Points Standings.

2)   You must have played a minimum of 15 times and 3 times in the last 12 play dates. If that player is present and a rainout occurs his presence will qualify as one of the necessary 3 plays

3)   If for some reason or another commitment and a player that has made the top 32 does not play the next player in the 33rd or lower spot does not take that position.

A WORD ABOUT RED TAIL ON SATURDAY

I was surprised when I arrived Saturday to find out that Red Tail had closed number seven due to the amount of rain we have had over the last two weeks. They should have actually closed several other holes as well but the point I am making is that in my shared opinion we should have been advised earlier in the week as to what the conditions were. We could have then made a decision based on what you the group wanted to do about the severe wet conditions that existed there. Lesson learned and it will not happen again.

FRIDAY RESULTS

GOODMAN KEEPS ROLLING WITH ANOTHER FIRST

Jerry Goodman used a very consistent three birdies no bogeys round of  69 +6 in winning for the second week in a row.  A disappointing group of just 23 players obviously believed our crack weather people here in central Florida and feared the rain forecast but as usual we got no rain and enjoyed the mid 80’s weather at Eagle Dunes. Another remarkable thing about Jerry’s last two weeks is that he was in the 52nd position on July 20th and now occupies the 11th position on the points standings and has won $622 in that time between July 20th and August 17th. Congratulations Jerry on some really fine golf!!

JEFF EBBERT FINALLY GETS TO WINNERS CIRCLE

One of the very few players that gets excited about playing Red Tail is Jeff Ebbert.  He proved why he likes it Saturday as he was one of only four players to be plus at the very difficult and WET Red Tail CC. Jeff posted a round of 74 +7 that included an Eagle 3 on number two and two birdies. Just to show players how fast things can turn around Jeff entered the round in the 30th position and only averaging $17.28 in winnings per play.  He left the round in the 17th position averaging $32.56 per play in winning.

So wet was it, that the seventh hole was not even open because it was flooded.  In order to record scores properly for handicapping all players were given two points as a par on seven to make posting come out even.

FRIDAY RESULTS

GOODMAN AND SLEDD TIE AT PLUS 7

Two players with single digit handicaps tied for first place on a very important “Bonus Points Week”.  Jerry Goodman went into Friday play needing 34 points and posted a round of 71 +7.  Jerry’s excellent play on Friday, followed by a very respectable 6th place tie on Saturday, earned him a jump from the 37th position 22 spots to number 15 on the top 32 that earn a spot in the upcoming October shootout.
